What is the pop-up ad.yieldmanager.com? It seems to do nothing.
If it is a malware or spy bot, why do they advertise itself with a pop-up?

My pop-up blocker stops it most of the time but the other day I had to turn it off. I get this pop-up like crazy with it off.

I found these files in my Temp Internet files:
ako[1]
ako[2]
ako[3]
ako[4]
ako[5]
If I open ako[5] with text Pad, this is in it:

function rsi_img(p,u,c){if(u.indexOf(location.protocol)==0){var i=new Image(2,3);if©{i.onload=c;}
i.src=u;p[p.length]=i;}}
function rsi_simg(p,s,i){if(i<s.length){rsi_img(p,s[i],function(){rsi_simg(p,s,i+1);});}}
function rsi_req_pix(l,s){var w=window;if(typeof(w.rsi_imgs)=="undefined"){w.rsi_imgs=[];}
if(typeof(w.rsi_simgs)=="undefined"){w.rsi_simgs=[];}
var a=w.rsi_imgs;var b=w.rsi_simgs;var i;for(i=0;i<l.length;++i){if(s){b[b.length]=l[i];}else{rsi_img(a,l[i]);}}
if(s){rsi_simg(a,b,0);}}
rsi_req_pix([],0);rsi_req_pix(['http://ad.yieldmanager.com/pixel?id=107880&t=2','http://ads.revsci.net/adserver/ako?record_activation&rsi_dpr=107880'],1);

Hi jkgraham,

Please do the following...

ComboFix

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I followed the steps listed. My log files are listed below.
We now have a new problem.
My Symantic AntiVirus is broken.
The Symantic AntiVirus Icon in the tray has a exclamtion point.
When I go to Control Panel - Service and try to start: Symantec AntiVirus Client
I get an error: "Could not start Symantic AntiVirus Client service on Local Computer.
Error 5: Access is denied.

Hi jkgraham,

Please do the following...

Combofix Script.txt

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb6334.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb8467.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb41.dat
DirLook::
C:\TEMP\IETemp2
C:\TEMP\IE_Temp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PQSNVEWL

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

The ComboBox script doesn't seem to work.
I created the .txt file with notepad, saved it to my desktop, dragged it over the ComboFix icon.
ComboxFix began to run the little status bar appeared, followed by an hour glass, then the screen blinked once and that was it. This is what I have in the CFScript.txt:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb6334.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb8467.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\internaldb41.dat
DirLook::
C:\TEMP\IETemp2
C:\TEMP\IE_Temp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PQSNVEWL

After ComboFix fail to run the CFScript, I ran it again without using the script. That log is included below.

____________________________________________________________________________
More information than you asked for:

If you're wondering why the directories "C:\TEMP\IETemp2", "C:\TEMP\IE_Temp" are there,
I created those a few weeks ago. They are junk folders. I went ahead and deleted them.
But they were there when I tried to run the CFScript.txt

____________________________________________________________________________
Other tasks:
- Java has been updated.
- ATF Cleaner worked per your instructions.
- Malewarebytes worked per your instructions.
- The Malewarebytes, ComboFix, and Hijackthis logs are listed below.

Note:
The HiJackThis log in my previous message was ran after I had turned of some services and processes off before running ComboFix. The HiJackThis log I provide this time was after a reboot, so you may notice more processes running than before.

____________________________________________________________________________
Report on how things are running:
- The Symantic Anti-Virus RtvScan.exe will still not run. I think I will have to reinstall/repair the software to get that back.
- I still get the pop ups although much much less often, if I go to this web site:
http://www.intellicast.com
In the past, this site was one of the worst for seeing the pop-ups. Now I get one or two after going through about 20 different pages.

They no logger say logon ad.yeildmanger.com, they now say logon to b.casalemedia.com but still ask for a user name and password.

Also, after they appear the files "ako[]" do appear in the Temporary Internet Folders as they did when we started. I found those files by running Sysinternals-Filemonitor while browsing the web. When the pop-up would appear I would see the ako[] files appear. Now the pop-ups seem to be operating differently and I can't find any files using Filemonitor yet. I also suppect the Java upgrade may have helped. Because instead of the pop-ups I get a warning that an ActiveX file was blocked when I browse http://www.intellicast.com.

Hi jkgraham,

Sorry for the delay, for some reason I didn’t get the email notification of your reply.

Your logs look pretty good, let’s do one more scan to make sure were not missing anything.

Fix with HijackThis

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Kaspersky WebScanner
please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Here is a little information on b.casalemedia.com & ad.yieldmanager

Casale Media and ad.yieldmanager uses a commercial marketing cookie that generally tracks consumer browsing habits and create advertizement popups. This information can be retrieved by the parent company to determine the rate of sales, the efficiency of their ads, etc… etc…. While this is not a serious security threat, it is a common problem/annoyance. A lot of the links are click through links that are used by advertising. The links that you are clicking on drop a ad.yieldmanager or Casale Media cookie on your machine, so the best suggestions I can give you are to :
  • Avoid the sites that are causing these cookies
  • Clear all your cookies daily
  • Add ad.yieldmanager and b.casalemedia.com site to your host file.
  • block third party cookies. To get to this setting, go to Tools \ Options \ Privacy and then click on Advanced. Just check the box for Override automatic cookie handling, and then select Block on the Third-party cookies radio button.
  • Another method would be to use FireFox as your browser. if you install the AdBlock plugin and also block ad.yieldmanager cookies.
Any of those suggestions should help :)
