Lost Icons on desktop and in start menu

Ok a freinds computer lost all icons. Windows Vista. Haven't did much work on vista. They are also having trouble with internet. I tried to go on to net and google anything and it brings up same page in google no matter what you search for. Tried to do ipconfig release and renew but it found no connection. They have norton internet security up to date so I ran AVG and found 6 files. Got rid of them but did't help. Not sure how I'm going to help them if they can't get to the net?? Any suggestions?? They also play web games so I think it might be related to the games.
