Sound card problem?

Hi folks

When playing music on my Dell Dimension 9100 (3 years old) the sound volume seems to be increasing and decreasing randomly without me touching the volume controls. This is on tracks that have always played fine before.

I wondered if this is a sign of the sound card beginning to fail?

Any ideas?
