This is my first posting, but I have read many of the others listed. I followed all instructions including: As-aware, CW Shredder, and Trend Housecall. I have a blue screen with white text stating

"A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM (01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c

*System cannot function in normal mode. Please check security settings.

*Scan your PC with any reliable antivirus/spyware remover program to fix the problem."

I am able to access the internet and run my programs, slowly, but they still run. I do have about 20 unwanted icons that I can't delete (they return once I finish deleting all of them): online gaming, party poker, pharmacy, etc.

I finally did the hijack this, here is my log:

It appears like a SMITFRAUD problem so:

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!
Print these instructions

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Press CTRL ALT DELETE to open Windows Task Manger. Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmonp.exe

Exit Task Manager.

*Click Here http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=4 to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field) MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

*Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00 http://www.resplendence.com/download
*Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
*Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

*Click the "Go" button.
*It will take you into the "Policies" folder.
*Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel)
*If found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete
*Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE <http://www.funkytoad...oad/hoster.zip> Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp! http://www.greyknigh...spy/Cleanup.exe

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft...com/activescan/ - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks for the help! I did all of the steps listed. I got to the last one, pandasoftware, ran the online scan and tried to run the report. It said 4 infected items were found and deleted, but I wasn't able to print the report. I keep getting a pop-up coming in and it won't let me go back to the online scan. This happened 3 times so far.

All of the other steps worked fine. Is there another report I can post here in order to do a check-up? I no longer have a blue screen, just a plain black one this time. I do still have the unwanted icons, again trying to delete them just makes them come back! Also, when I am online, I am often sent to sites I am not choosing to go.

Thanks again, any advice???

I ran the Microsoft WIndows Anti-spyware and the Ad-aware se. I also did the trojan hunter, trend micro, and mcafee av scans. Here is the latest log.

I still have the unwanted icons and the constant pop-ups. A new warning came up stating: _WinSterHJK v.2011 accessed through ports -3128 and -8080, not sure what that all means.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Thank you for your continued help, this is just so frustrating. I tired your suggestions 3 times and still can't remove the first item from the hjt log (newgenlook.com).

Even when I am not online, the internet will pop up, always on newgenlook.com.

Here is the latest log, any further help???

I tried it again in safe mode, disconnected from the internet. I was still unable to get rid of the RO-HKCU\software\microsoft\internetexplorer\main,start page=http://www,newgenlook.info/ad.ad0278[/B] in the hjt log.

Here is the latest log, any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your continued help. This was the first chance I had to try your suggestions. I did everything up until the online scan, "activescan." However, after 3 attempts, I was unable to complete the scan. The first one I did (only the hard drive) resulted in no viruses. But, when I tried a whole computer scan, I kept getting interrupted by popups. This is my contined problem, I can't do anything online without being interrupted. I went on to the hjt but was unable to remove the one item. Once I would check it the following would appear: "Fix 1 selected items? This will premanently delete and/or repair what you selected, unless you make a backup. Yes No" When I click yes everything is cleared (only the first item is checked), yet doesn't really get rid of it. Here is the latest log, I don't think anything has changed. Thanks again!

Please save HJT in its own separate folder and not teh desktop

You may need to be in Safe Mode to find it or use My Computer/Windows Explorer and activate "Show Hidden/System Files" Show Hidden and System files:
http://service1.syma...x&osv=&osv_lvl=

Please follow the instructions below if you wish to remove the offending objects from your machine

The first step to clean your machine, it is highly recommended that you clean the following directory contents (but not the directory folder):
* C:\Windows\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested. In Windows 98*admin you can also go to IE, Tools, Internet Options, Temproary Internet Files section, Delete Files and check Off Line Content
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

You may want to use CCleaner found here http://www.ccleaner.com

HJT
Do NOT connect to the internet for the following
Close all windows
Open HJT and scan
If you wish to remove these entries then place checkmark(s) beside the entries below, once all entries have been checked press Fixed Check. Entry in blue looks suspicious if you recognize it then do not remove it

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0278/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [yea] C:\WIN\System32\yea.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com

Reboot
Repost a new HJT log file

Confirm these folders or files are deleted
