There seem to be a lot of problems with this computer, I have installed Kaspersky 2009 and sometimes it detects Viruses and sometimes it doesnt. Also the computer is very slow, I just run Outlook 2007 and Firefox most of the time and still it is very sluggish which wasn't the case earlier.

I had removed Viruses from this machine earlier and at that time had made a CLEAN system restore backup, but now I can't find that either, I don't know what is the reason. All system restore files are only 2-3 months old the others have disappeared. Can I do something to correct this for the future.

I forgot to add that I have the most annoying problem because whenever I right click on ANY icon, the Windows installer starts and stays there for a few seconds, it always causes a lag. Is there any way to fix that?

Thank you in advance.

Hello dash85 !

Welcome to the site! :) My name's Egwene and I'll be helping clean up your computer. :) I'm currently looking over your log. I am still in training here, so there might be a delay between my replies as they need to be checked by an expert before I can post them. I'll need a bit of time to research your log fully, so please bear with me.

Before we proceed to clean your computer from malware, let's go over some points that will help both me and you, and prevent causing damage to your computer:
  • To make sure that you receive an email when I reply to this topic, please click here and check that this topic is listed under Malware Removal - HijackThis™ Logs Go Here.
  • Please don't be afraid to ask questions! No question is considered dumb here. It's better to be safe than sorry!
  • When posting logs, please ensure Wordwrap is turned off in Notepad (to check, open Notepad click on Format | Uncheck Word Wrap)
  • Please follow the steps exactly in the same order posted. If you can't perform a certain step, or you're unsure on what to do, please stop and let me know.
  • NEVER fix anything in HijackThis or other programs on your own! This can be very dangerous and cause harm to your system. If you see a certain entry or program you're unsure about, please don't hesitate to ask!
  • Make sure you reply to this thread using the Add Reply button: Posted Image

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Hello dash85,

Let's begin with the removal. :)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

N.B : Please check if you have posted me all the content of the log. If not, please post me what is missing in a other reply :)

Regards,
Egwene.

Hello dash85,

Let's go with the removal. :)

Please be sure you plug in your usb drives before doing the following handlings !

1) Uninstall some programs :

Please go Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):
  • Adobe Reader 8.1.2
  • BitComet 0.99
  • LimeWire

Optional Removals : You have at least one peer-to-peer softwares on your computer. If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does, click Here.
Even if you are using a so called "safe" program,it's only the program that's safe.

2) Fix with HijackThis :

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below :

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {12F02779-6D88-4958-8AD3-83C12D86ADC7} - (no file)
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Optional removals : Fix these entries in red if ONLY it's not you who has put these restrictions on Internet explorer.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected.[/color]

3) Backing up your registry :

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modfying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  • Download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.

4) Run OTmoveIT2 :

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")

Hi Egwene,

I couldn't follow two of your steps because the JavaRa didn't open anything when I clicked update from the website. Also I can't run the Kaspersky test because my broadband connection is not up to speed.

Here is the MBAM log:

Hello dash85,

If you have still an issue, it's not a malware issue now :)

You can go in the tech forum Geeks to go : http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-XP-...2003-NT-f5.html

Our tech staff members will help you :)

Congralutations, your log looks clean :)

1) Run OTcleanIT :

Please Download OTcleanIT (OldTimer) : http://download.blee...r/OTCleanIt.exe

Open it and double-click on the "CleanUp" boutton.

2) Flush your system restore :

Now lets Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected, but that's good news).

Turn OFF System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

3) Update windows :

Another essential is to keep your computer updated with the latest operating system patches and security fixes. Windows Updates are constantly being revised to combat the newest hacks and threats, Microsoft releases security updates that help your computer from becoming vunerable. It is best if you have these set to download automatically.

Automatic Updates for Windows

* Click Start.
* Select Settings and then Control Panel.
* Select Automatic Updates.
* Click Automatic (recommended)
* Choose a day and a time when you know the computer will be on and connected to the internet.
* Click Apply then OK.

4) Prevention/protection :

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • If you haven't a firewall on your computer, I advice you to install one of the following : Kerio / Commodo / ZoneAlarme.

  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.

  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

    Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

  • Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from

Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
