My game keeps crashing to a totally blue screen and the sound gets "stuck". All I can do after that is turn the computer off with the power button.
I tried several times to uninstall BF 1942 and reinstall it again with all the patches, to no avail.
I had also tried to manually update Punkbuster with the 2 methods (like PBWeb)mentioned on the punkbuster website. It looked like it was succesfull in updating, but afterwards I got the same game crash. :tazz:
I then saw that they released a new PB version for BF1942 a few days ago and I started to suspect this was the reason for all the problems.
I deleted the whole PB folder and in doing so disabled Punkbuster.
The game now runs smoothly again. Ofcourse I'ld like to run the game WITH punkbuster enabled. Any ideas on how to do this? ;)

I think if you deleted the Punkbuster files the you would have to reinstall them, and the only way I know of is to reinstall the entire game. There may be another way, but I'm not aware of it. I also am not a Battlefield Pro, but I do play :tazz:

I think you did not understand me correctly. I deleted the Punkbuster cuz that seems to be the whole reason for my game crashing. So it's not because i deleted punkbuster that my game crashes, it crashes with punkbuster installed. Only with punkbuster disabled does my BF 1942 game run as smoothly again as it did for the last few years.
I read on the punkbuster website that they brought out a new version of PB for Battlefield this past thursday, it's then that my troubles started.
Trying to update punkbuster manually through the PB website did not solve the problem. So i deleted PB because then i can at least play on the few servers that don't use punkbuster. :tazz:

Oh, I understand, I was just answering to the question you asked about how to get Punkbuster back.

Ofcourse I'ld like to run the game WITH punkbuster enabled. Any ideas on how to do this?

Can you still run the old version of PB or are you forced to update it?

If punkbuster can't update it kicks you off the game server.
So you always need to have the must up to date version of it in order to be able to play.

Does the PunkBuster site have any sort of details on an incompatibility list for the newest version or something? I don't know I'm just throwing ideas.

No..nothing like that on their website...
I sent a message to their support, but haven't gotten a reply yet.
They also don't have any forums or such on their site..maybe they were getting too many complaints? :tazz:
I don't think i would be the only person with this problem.. I'm always hearing a lot of people complaining about punkbuster not working properly. It has worked fine for me all this time, until last weekend that is.

ok, just go to evenbalance.com and get the pbweb.exe file. place it in the battlefield\pb folder . navigate directly to the folder and run pbweb.exe. this will take a while to run the first time. this will update pb for you. in game updates do not fully update the client.

I already did that and I also tried the other way of updating PunkBuster manually:
I uninstalled and reinstalled the game again with all the patches. I downloaded the pbsecfile and put it in the appropriate folder, but the game still crashed. Then I downloaded and installed the 2 "client files" only to discover they were already installed. I overwrote them anyway (so installed them again). Surprisingly enough the game seemed to work after that since i played on a punkbuster server for about an hour last night. Until I turned the computer off and then started it again this morning....as soon as i got onto a punkbuster server the screen went blue and the sound got stuck (stuttered). It seems like the PC goes into some sleep mode, because I only have to push the powerbutton lightly to turn it completely off after that (the only thing I can do, since the PC is completely frozen). Normally I have to hold the powerbutton for about 5 secs to turn it off.

The issue is not that the punkbuster can't update, it IS up to date.

The issue is that for some reason this punkbuster update makes my PC crash everytime I sign on to a server that uses PunkBuster. If I disable punkbuster and get on a server that doesn't use punkbuster i can play the game just fine (just tried that again). :tazz:

let me restate:

This is the executable for Punkbusters Client side AUTO UPDATING using WINDOWS Operating Systems:
http://www.evenbalan...loads/pbweb.exe

Be sure to save the pbweb.exe into the home "pb" folder (C:\Program Files\Call of Duty\pb) on your hard drive and then launch PBWEB.exe. If PBWEB is not launched from inside the home "pb" directory/folder, then it will not work.

This is the easiest way to AUTO update Punkbusters from the player/client side. The game server does NOT update ALL of your game files. This way will do that for you!

I would recommend doing this even if your not having problems or if your having 999 problems along with No Packet Flow errors & PB Initialization Failures.

This can take a little while to run........this is typical!

As I understand you manually updated pb by downloading :
For Players Filename: pbsec.htm
For Admins Filename: pbsecsv.htm
PB Client v1.177 for Win32 Filename: wc001177.htm
PB ClientA v1331 for Win32 Filename: wa001331.htm

just for comparison this is mylog from pbweb:

[05.04.2005 18:00:30] PBWEB v2.2

I don't consider pb updated until pbweb has been run.

I've done some googling and visited punksbusted.com and haven't seen anyone reporting similar issues. So humor me and lets see if pbweb can fix the issue. once its run post the log file (found in the pb folder) after it runs.

AS you can tell from my first post, which is on the top of this page, I've already tried PBweb before..and it updated just fine. Like I said, I'm pretty sure Punkbuster is up to date, but that doesn't seem to be the issue. It seems that the new update PunkBuster issued somehow keeps crashing my PC..maybe some incompatibility with my PC configuration? :tazz:
Just to humor you though i ran PBweb again and here's the log:

Thank you. I've found nothing in looking at pb sites. Tomorrow I'll start looking at battlefield sites and see what I can find. I wouldn't be suprised if they just release a new update in a few days.

The only other thought I have is maybe the server needs to have its pb updated.....
