I have a Gateway GM5089 from Costco. I've had it for about two years or so. Recently, the USB mouse would freeze on the screen, but just on the screen. Its like it turned into an invisible mouse. If I watched the links, I could move the mouse around and still click. The probably would start anywhere from 3-30 minutes into any session and would go away if I rebooted.

My first troubleshooting step was to do a virus scan. There were no viruses. Note that I only did an online virus scan.

Next, I tried a different USB port with the mouse, same problem.

So next I try a different mouse. Its a logitech cordless optical mouse where the mouse plugs into a mouse port and the keyboard can plug into the usb port or by an adapter, to the keyboard port. So I try with the mouse in the mouse port but the keyboard with the usb port.

Same problem.

So I move the keyboard to the keyboard port with the adapter. Everything worked fine for about 5 hours then it started again.

So at this point, I'm thinking that there is some conflict with the mouse software but I'm out of troubleshooting steps and I don't know how to fix it.

Can anyone help?
