Hey there,

I came across your website today when I googled "Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c" after I got a blue screen telling me my system was experiencing problems with it. Some other people (including a certain Homerjay, check http://www.geekstogo...ic=16897&st=15) seem to have had the same problem.

Before I found your website, unfortunately I panicked a bit and deleted some files manually, for example the wp.exe and the links which the nasty added to my Internet Explorer. I also reset the start page, which had been changed. Oh yeah, both of that is very strange since I don't ever use IE except for Windows updates.

Anyways, once I found your homepage, I followed the instructions on the beginner's page, used Adaware, Spybot and CWShredder in the indicated ways and got the newest Windows Updates. I am also using a free but usually very reliable Antivirus which I update frequently. I will start one of the web-based antivirus right now, as I'm going to bed. I should be able to tell you tomorrow what the results of that were.

To get to the point, the only 2 problems left now (as far as I can tell) are frequent Internet Explorer popups (advertising spyware remover and casino stuff) which happen after a blinking warning sign shows in the task bar, and the lack of some of the tabs (only two remain) to configure the screen (now black) when I right-click on the desktop.

I have run Hijack This and StartupList, the logs for both are below.

Well, I really hope you can help me with this, I much appreciate every kind of insight you have to offer, especially because I am quite an amateur myself.

Thanks a million,
Henrik

Hi Henrik and welcome to Geeks to Go,

Looks as though you removed a couple still afew more to go,

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

Press CTRL ALT DELETE to open Windows Task Manger. Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

msole32.exe
popuper.exe
bsw.exe

Exit Task Manager.

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Unzip it to the desktop.

* Please run Killbox.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing CTRL + C:

C:\wp.exe
c:\bsw.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

Please click this link to download Smitfraud.reg. Save it to your desktop. Doubleclick on it and when asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

Reboot your computer

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Hey Don77,

thank you for your help. Since the popups etc. were really bugging me, I found a site on the web that had a do-it-your-self thing on Smitfraud, and I did everything they told me to do there. The steps were pretty similar to what you wrote and there was also something to fix the registry afterwards.
The computer doesn't seem to have any problems now, and Ad-Aware found only one tracking cookie which I deleted while my Antivirus found nothing at all. Just in case I forgot something, I post a new HijackThis Log. It would great if you could just look over that one.

Thank you very much for your help,
Henrik

Nice job your log is clean !
How is it running ?
Please use the following suggestion to help prevent reinfection

Download the following program, For keeping crap off your system to begin with
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download Spyware Blaster

Keep Ad-aware and Spybot handy, Check them for updates prior to running and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

For an added check run an online virus scan, you can use one of the 2 below,
TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program
Download and install Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

Remeber to Check Windows for updates

Probably a good time to create a new restore point See Here Name it clean or something like that,

Thank you for your help and the tips, Don, I installed the programs you suggested and hope I won't have to bother you for a while now.

Take it easy and keep up the good work,
