After running Ad-Aware, CWShredder, Spybot S&D, TDS-3 and online scans by Trend Housecall and Panda Software, I reloaded Windows and began checking my Yahoo Mail inbox. After opening only a few mail items, I got several persistent popups from sp-servers.com (and others). I'd really appreciate any insight you might offer, as many of these popups are images my children should NOT see ...

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Download, install, and run
CleanUp! (so the below scan won't take as long because cleanup will clear temporary files and cookies)

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan (I know you have already run it, but I need to see the log!)

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log.

1. Click Start > Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Java icon (coffee cup) in the control panel. (Let me know if it says "Java Plug-in" under the icon because you won't be able to follow my directions if it does.)
The Java Control Panel appears.

3. Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.

4. Click Delete Files.
The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.

There are three options on this window to clear the cache - leave ALL 3 checked.
1. Delete Files
2. View Applications
3. View Applets

5. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.

6. Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.
Note: If you want to delete a specific application and applet from the cache, click on View Application and View Applet options respectively.

7. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Please read these instructions carefully

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field):

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\updates.exe
C:\Program Files\PestPatrol\Help.chm

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. (If you receive a "PendingRenameOperation..." prompt click "NO". Manually restart your computer, if it does not automatically restart.

Run ActiveScan again (to make sure those Java viruses are gone), post the activescan log along with a new HiJackThis log.

Awwright!! I think we got this problem licked, unless you see something amiss in the HJT log. I logged into my wife's account and saw no popups there either ... first time in YEARS! Bananafanafo, you da MAN!

The log looks great! I'm glad I could help! ;)

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

I recommend checking the http://www.microsoft.com website periodically for critical updates to install.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Ewido Security Suite <= Protection against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers.

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.

One new issue came up during this process. After one of the ActiveScan runs, I re-started the computer. During Windows start-up, I received an error stating that the Scan disc does not exist and I need to insert it in order to complete the scan.

I can't make this error go away by clicking on the red X in the upper right corner of the dialogue box. The only fix I've found is using Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then manually ending the Scan application. This is only a temporary fix, though, because the error recurs every time I reload Windows.

Any ideas?

Go to Start > Run - type in:

sfc /scannow

Make sure there is a space between sfc and /

Reboot your computer when it's done and let me know if you still receive the error message.

I tried running the sfc /scannow command, which took several minutes to complete, but had no apparent effect when I rebooted.

Here's a little more detail on the problem.

When Windows is almost finished booting, I get a message box that says "Please wait while Windows configures Scan."

After about a minute, there's an Error 1706 message box that explains: "No valid source could be found for product Scan. The Windows installer cannot continue."

What do you suggest?
