Distorted sound on computer

The sound on my computer is garbled and distorted. It does this for net news clips, mp3s and audio CDs.

I don't know what went wrong. I have the problem through speakers or headphones at any volume level.

Its a Dell Dimenion 9150 and I have reinstalled the newest audio driver from Dell for the Sigmatel audio.

I am really mystified why my sound now sounds like a blown speaker?
