Every time i restart/shutdown, a ending program box pops up and says,

ending proram - perfroming update...

has the bar that gradually goes up

choose end now to end this program immediately and lose any unsaved info etc...

and it has "end now" button

when the bar finishes, it says its not responding and gives the option to return to windows and check the status of the program by clicking cancel.

if i click end now at any time, the windows closes and the comp restarts.

my comp has been doing this for months. i tried to fix it a while back but gave up when no one knew anything about it on any boards etc...

any help would be so appreciated!

Can you identify the name of the program? Is it one that you are using? If it is not one that you are using you could disable it from automatic start up by running msconfig. Ther is soooo much software that just wants to help you by starting automatically every time you boot up (really eats up system resources...some help). You can stop that by going to start, run and type in: msconfig

Then click on startup, and un-check those you don't want to start on boot up.

I do know which program it is- it's the windows automatic update; it's trying to update my computer. However, I still get updates regularly, where the little balloon will pop up and say, "new updates are ready to install."

Anyway, does anyone else have any ideas?

Note the time, and shut down your computer until you get an error...

On reboot,

Start > run
Eventvwr.msc
<enter>

Look under Applications and System for error events with Red Xs that happened at the time of the shutdown.
