just happened today after my system completely crashed. i have the red shield on the bottom right side of the start bar and the defender icon with a little exclamation mark on a yellow background. sites like BoA, chase, hotmail, gmail, and i'm sure many more that used to be certified safe are now uncertified and give me warnings when i go to check my email and do various other things.

the error code i get is....

Error found: Code 0x80072f8f

if anyone knows what this is or how i can fix it i would certainly appriciate it.

Windows Defender on XP stopped updating ages ago for reasons that have never really been explained and for whatever reason Microsoft don't seem to be aware of it.

19 different computers I've fixed in the last year or so, using the same file from Microsoft, none of them update on their own even on fresh installations of XP. Under Vista the updates come through Windows Update which is great but that isn't the case under XP.

Download and install the updates manually. Whether it'll continue to update after that I couldn't say.

Error code 0x80072f8f is typically wrong date and time.

the manual update doesn't work either, maybe i should have put that in the original post. it won't update automatically and won't let me update it manually. it just won't update and now that i've looked at more websites i'm finding more things that are different. my gmail im isn't working any longer and i can't even log in to a friends website now. i don't think it's a virus but if it is i'll go post on the malware threads for some help, i'm just hoping it isn't that.

Post a log in the Malware forum just to make sure, though its possible that your installation is damaged and needs a Windows Repair.
