XP Laptop slow performance

Compaq presario 900, running originally installed windows xp (service pack 2, I believe). System start-up taking more than 10 mins. Have spybot an adaware and I think system is clean of spyware. Does have Symantec Endpoint - perhaps contributing?

Have you added any new hardware or software?
Check in device manager for any ! or ? on devices.
What do you have starting up when the computer starts? (In msconfig)

There are no devices with the ! or ?, the response issues pre-date any very recently installed programs. There are several programs in startup under msconfig startup tab. Can't seem to be able to copy to attach to this.
