Hi Fenor,
Thankyou for your reply, but i have to disagree with you, to a certain point anyway
Digital audio workstations, or DAWs as the music industry like to call them dont always have to be big powerful machines and certainly not just desktops either.
Obviously the more ram and faster the processor you have will allow you to take on massive projects ( songs ) with the least of problems, but lesser abled machines do just as well.
The music industry is suffering from the " gamers syndrome ", , want more,, want bigger, want better. Most of the time its pure overkill.
3 yrs ago, top studios were using what we would class now as run of the mill machines and having marvelous results. Its only since the introduction of dual core cpus that the madness started. My desktop for instance is dated by any definition of the word, but still has 2gb ram, a 3.4ghz dual core processor an 8800 gts graphics card and audigy 4 soundcard. Its dated, but its overkill for what i use it for There are muscians out there that are raving on about building quad core machines with 64 bit os so that they can put in bucket fulls of ram, , , their present machine allows them to do much, much more than they do now, with lots of headroom left over, , why upgrade to something thats only going to benefit a top engineer who is working with 80 to 150 tracks for 1 song ? ?
My point is, , my laptop is more than equipped with enough ram and a fast enough cpu to serve my humble means.
I work with between 8 and 16, 17 tracks of audio with very little cpu utilisation at all, , this type of software isnt a cpu hog and never has been. Most of the modern vsti softsynths ( absynth, z3ta, fm8, korg legacy ) hardly use any processor at all, so , , cpu speed is not that essential unless you are using lots of vsti effects and instruments at the same time... Its all about ram, , , yes i would be happier with 3 or 4 gb, , but again, its overkill. My 2 gb is by far enough for what i use it for.
What i would like to do is to have mp AMD athlon 64 cpu not dripping itself at its own will when i am in the middle of a project. Untill i moved from 1.5gb to 2 gb of ram i did have a few dropout problems, but that seems to have disapeard now i have upgraded the ram
These completed audio files can take up GBs of space when a project is completed but i have a 120gb drive and a 320gb firewire external drive for back up.
My laptop is not ideal for waht i want to use it for, and yes, i would like to have the space for a another desktop, , but thats not the case.
Have a listen to a few of my songs and see for yourself the results that can be had from a laptop using cubase sx3. Follow the link below ! !
Back to my original question, , , is there any way i can have some control over the cpus stability and utilisation running xp pro ? ? ?
Cheers, , kev
