First of all thanks for a fantastic resource...

I have attempted to remove what I believe was the smitfraud.c infection using the guidance on this site: Ad-Aware, CWShredder, Spybot and AVG. Also the reargaurd actions of SpyWare blaster, Firefox and Sun's Java VM.

However one symptom persists, specifically a yellow triangle icon in the system tray, and popups linked to it. These contain a variety of messages, the most recent of which were "Network fatal error @ 00FF:2348AD. Warning your internet connection is not secured. Please use network security software to protect your PC from remote attacks and hacks. Click "OK" to get all the available "Network Security" software."

Please read these instructions carefully - print them.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

Select the Delete on reboot option.

In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting:

C:\wp.exe

It will prompt you to reboot, press the NO button. Instead, copy and paste the following and click the 'Delete File' button again:

C:\wp.bmp

When it prompts you to reboot this time, press the NO button again and repeat the process on all these files until the last one has been entered then press the YES button:

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way):

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop. Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

Click the "Go" button and it will take you into the "Policies" folder. Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel), if found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete

Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

Download this file to your desktop. Click HERE. Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so. Repeat for all log-in accounts on your computer.

Post a new HiJackThis log here when done.

It's running great, thanks very much.
No symptoms discernible by me remain.
Except possibly this (follows) - but I'm guessing this is completely unrelated - would you concur?

My 802.11g network connection is reported to be dropping in and out intermittently. A wired connection to the access-point-cum-router however is fine.
