I have a Sony Vaio laptop. Rarely use it. Has an XP operating system. It just started entering incorrect characters when I type. Example: when I enter i it comes out as a 5. Is there a function key that I may have hit that is causing this and how do I correct the problem?

yep. Most likely you have the num lock function on. you should try pressing the "Fn" key and whatever key says "num lock" in the little blue (or in some cases, white) print.

FYI, for future reference, topics like this should probably be posted in the hardware forum. :)
