nope, you don't have to actually pull the plug. Just make sure you have no browsers, programs, windows, etc open other than HJT.

Take a deep breath! Breathe in.............breathe out. Ready??

Give yourself a big High 5! You had a very nasty looking log when you first posted, and by following directions exactly you made this a very quick and easy cleanup!! Kudos to you!!

Please DO update to SP2 now! ;)

Congratulations! :tazz: Your log is clean! ;)
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

many thanks for all your help! I'll take a look at security another day, it's about bedtime :tazz:

I know for a fact i've got avast, free surfer mk II (popup killer), i only use IE when i really have to (firefox is browser of choice). Apparetnly my router (or modem, i dont remember) has a firewall built into it (so i'm told) That ewido is running in my toolbar & i haven't uninstalled any programs i added in the process of sorting the problems out. Do you feel i need to do more to make myself secure? (am doing pack 2 now)

ok..the firewall you have with that is a hardware firewall. I still recommed downloading and using Kerio or ZoneAlarm. Both are free and easy to use.

Keep SpyBot and AdAware. Update them each at least once a week, and let them run a scan, removing any little nasties or tracking cookies they find.

I really do HIGHLY recommend the SpywareBlaster. That will block many many types of malware and cookies from ever getting onto your system. Check for updates and enable new protections at least once a week.

Good luck!
