Hi helpful people!

I'm having the most interesting (actually, ANNOYING is the right word) issues. I have a HP Pavilion Laptop. It has a NVidia graphics Card, is an Intel Centrino 32 bit processor, running vista. The issue is when I am on the computer, there are the weirdest lag times happening. On start up, it takes a while for everything to get moving -- generally 2-3 minutes. #2, if I accidentally, or purposefully, move the task bar (usually located at the bottom of the screen), or resize it, it takes the computer anywhere from 2-3 minutes to even respond. Everything just freezes up. #3 - when I hit ctrl-alt-delete to access task manager, it again takes the computer 2-3 minutes to respond before opening up task manager. Very annoying. Little things like this happen all the time. There are a few other things -- but those are the biggest ones. I spoke to the Norton people w/ their online tech support, and they insist it's a Windows problem, not theirs. Our Desktop, also a Vista machine by HP does not have this issue. Hmm.... what else. Oh, yes. I installed an updated driver for the Video card this evening, and it did not solve the problem.

So, wise ones. Any ideas for a frustrated computer user?

Thanks!

See if it is your memory.
Click this for a guide to using Memtest

Click this to download Memtest

Run it overnight if possible

We checked the memory the other day -- granted, not with MemTest, but it check out fine. Wouldn't a memory issue be causing more random freezes? My computer "hangs" at exact locations -- the taskbar, task manager, and I've got a Wacom tablet - when I click on the thing to open up it's notepad, it hangs. Those three things. It seems very specific about when and where it freezes up. I may run the memtest utility tonight (will it find things that internal memory test wouldn't find?), but in the meantime -- any other ideas?

Thanks!

Lets see if you have any errors in the event viewer.
  • Go to Start -> Run.
  • In the Box, type in "eventvwr".
  • When the window pops up. Go to the system log and application log.
  • Look for red circles with "X"s in them around the time of error.
  • Once you've opened the error press the button to the right with the 2 papers on it. (under the 'down' arrow)
  • Please attach the information you just copied onto your next reply.

I'm sorry for the time between my replies.
I've had a few e-mail notices disappear on me.

I haven't troubleshooted windows Vista a lot and I can't recognize anything that would cause these errors.
I will ask another techy to take a look at it :)

Regards,
Olrik

Do you have a USB device plugged in? If you do, unplug it and see if you still get the 'hanging' problems.
ACDSee10.exe could be a virus or it could belong to a legitimate application belonging to ACD Systems.
