Hello, Not sure what is going on but there is a SERVICES.EXE that hogs all the CPU resources and stops this laptop dead for periods of time. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jbenomi

I see two possible causes.

SpywareGuard (On some computers it disagrees with something else running and that peaks CP usage)
Shut down the resident protection and reboot and you'll kknow whether that was it.

I also see some processes indicating you are running a webserver, which strikes me as a bit strange for a laptop.

Let me know if any of this makes sense.

It definitely makes sense, as the Services.exe did not start running wild (as best I can remember) until right around the time I installed all the malware avoidance tools suggested by the "start here" post on geekstogo...

I shut down the resident protection and saw no change. I uninstalled just to make sure SG was not the issue and saw no change.

I probably do have a webserver on this machine but would like to uninstall it. This laptop was used ina former life by an SAP IT consultant.

What should we try next?

thanks, jbenomi

Then lets disable some stuff. If you want any of it back or go wrong somewhere, HijackTHis makes backups, you can Restore those by selecting Config > Backups

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_01\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Startup: SpywareGuard.lnk = C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: InterVideo WinCinema Manager.lnk = C:\Program Files\InterVideo\Common\Bin\WinCinemaMgr.exe

O23 - Service: JBoss Application Server (JBoss) - Unknown owner - C:\java\jboss-3.2.3\bin\Wrapper.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: MySQL - Unknown owner - C:\mysql\bin\mysqld.exe (file missing)

Reboot and let me know if that is better.

Did you just add another antivirus to your misery?

I now see AVG and you already had something from Symantec and Computer Associates.

Can you please tell me what's what. Running several Antiviruses resident is not a good idea.

I did not do anything but run the HJT, checked the boxes to fix as advised, and restarted and then ran another HJT log file and posted it. That's it. I did not add anything that was not already there...

I have uninstalled AVG and the machine is rebooting (I am working on another machine right now)

I will keep the Symantec and did not know that I had any CA antivirus on that machine...

CA is not necessarily the Antivirus. They also have PestPatrol and probably some other security products.

These services belong to them:

O23 - Service: CA License Client (CA_LIC_CLNT) - Computer Associates International Inc. - C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\CA_LIC\lic98rmt.exe
O23 - Service: CA License Server (CA_LIC_SRVR) - Computer Associates International Inc. - C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\CA_LIC\lic98rmtd.exe

O23 - Service: Event Log Watch (LogWatch) - Computer Associates - C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\CA_LIC\LogWatNT.exe

Ring any bells?

They must have been on the machine when I got it. I did not ever install or buy any CA products.

You can disable those services then. (Fix the ones I listed with HijackThis)

That should make a difference as well.
Let me know if that is decisive or if you continue to have problems.
