Hi and thank you for your help.

I first detected the viruses through Sophos software, but the software was unable to remove the files. I tried the recommendation of running a manual scan, but I ran into a "Workgroup Deterioration" error that prevented me from ever completing the scan.

I have been through all the steps on the "must read this page" including running the Malwarebytes Software 3 times including the full scan the results of which were:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.28

After the first two scans, new scans still detected the same problems and after this third scan and reboot I was still having the same problems (unsolicited virus scan/software popups/attempts to install such software on my computer). I ran HiJackThis, the results of which were:

Hi there,

Welcome to GeeksToGo.

OK firstly, I need you to print out each post I make so that you can refer to it while we fix your computer. This is because there will be times when you are unable to be online to read my instructions, and I will want you to do everything very carefully. I also need you to follow my instructions in the order that they are given. If however, you cannot carry out one of them, please continue on with the next and let me know what you were unsuccessful with.

Next, I would like to make sure that you can view hidden files and folders (if possible);
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We need to get rid of one of the services running on your machine. To do this, copy (Ctrl +C) and paste (Ctrl +V) the text in the code box below to Notepad.
@echo off
sc stop SessionLauncher
sc delete SessionLauncher
exit
Save it to your desktop as File name: service.cmd
Save as type: All Files
Once done, double click service.cmd to run it. A command window will open briefly, then close. This is quite normal. When the command window has closed, you may delete service.cmd
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O3 - Toolbar: dkwqgnbe - {3E96B465-87EF-41EC-BBAA-EAA5E8E04521} - C:\WINDOWS\dkwqgnbe.dll
O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1
O21 - SSODL: neksolda - {9A298A1C-4628-4FF6-9CC4-37AB564D67FE} - C:\WINDOWS\neksolda.dll
O21 - SSODL: xgpsarbm - {EB114BEA-7C40-4E07-8B12-64A44D872F84} - C:\WINDOWS\xgpsarbm.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\dkwqgnbe.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\neksolda.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\xgpsarbm.dll
    :commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Check the Zip files after move checkbox.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it into a new Notepad file.
  • Save the results you have copied to your desktop as OTM3.txt.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please save that report to your desktop as Smitfraud.txt, and copy/paste the content into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlog...processutil.htm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run the program.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Note: A copy of these logs will be saved to your root drive, usually C:\rsit
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So in your next reply, please include the following logs:
  • The contents of OTM3.txt
  • The contents of Smitraud.txt
  • The contents of the two RSIT logs
Note that you will probably have to make two or three posts to ensure the logs are complete.

Regards,
RatHat

When copying the directions for OTMoveIt3, did you include the word CODE from the codebox?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please read this Combofix tutorial before continuing, then follow the instructions below.

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Next, download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. (You are using XP SP3)

Posted Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Posted Image

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Posted Image

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Save this log to your desktop as Combofix.txt and post it in your next reply.

(Note: Combofix will also save the report to C:\Combofix.txt)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So in your next reply, please include the following logs:
  • The contents of C:\rapport.txt
  • The contents of Combofix.txt
Note that you will probably have to make two or three posts to ensure the logs are complete.
Regards,
RatHat
Looks better. How is the machine performing?
Did you remove uTorrent at some stage? It is still showing in certain parts of your logs.
OK, could you run me an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Note: You must use Internet Explorer to run this scan, and you must disable your Anti Virus program during the scan.
Click the Accept button.
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display the results if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the View scan report link:
  • Click the Save report as button
  • Under Save as type, choose Text file (*.txt)
  • Save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
RatHat
RatHat,
UTorrent is still on my computer, but I do use it occasionally for files that I need. So far my machine is running excellently. I haven't had any of the virus popup stuff. I actually have a formal dinner (which starts at 5:00) so I am going to have to put this on hold until either later tonight or tomorrow, but I feel like my computer is in a pretty stable/healthy state. I will post again once I've completed those steps. Thanks again for your help. You are incredible!
I would advise removing uTorrent, at least until we have confirmed that you are clean.
Post me the results from Kaspersky when you can, so I can see if we have anything lingering.
Enjoy the dinner! :)
RatHat,
The Kaspersky Scan is as follows:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT
Sunday, October 5, 2008
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: 7.0.25.0
Program database last update: Sunday, October 05, 2008 07:01:12
Records in database: 1291372
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scan settings:
Scan using the following database: extended
Scan archives: yes
Scan mail databases: yes
Scan area - My Computer:
C:\
D:\
Scan statistics:
Files scanned: 59013
Threat name: 1
Infected objects: 3
Suspicious objects: 0
Duration of the scan: 00:45:48
File name / Threat name / Threats count
C:\Documents and Settings\Ashley Slaff\My Documents\Downloads\SmitfraudFix\Reboot.exe Infected: not-a-virus:RiskTool.Win32.Reboot.f 1
C:\Documents and Settings\Ashley Slaff\My Documents\Downloads\SmitfraudFix.exe Infected: not-a-virus:RiskTool.Win32.Reboot.f 1
C:\Documents and Settings\Ashley Slaff\My Documents\SmitfraudFix\Reboot.exe Infected: not-a-virus:RiskTool.Win32.Reboot.f 1
The selected area was scanned.
Sophos still says it finds some problems, but I stopped that scan to take care of this before I left this morning. I haven't had any of the virus problems though, so I think perhaps Sophos is just confused by the vertum files that had been quarantined before we began to fix the system. It looks like everything is resolved. Thanks so much, again, for your help! Let me know if there's anything else I need to do.
P.S. The dinner was fantastic!
Well you are looking clean. Kaspersky didn't find anything other than Smitfraudfix files, which are OK.
Lets uninstall Combofix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /u, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image
Now lets remove OTMoveIt3 and Smitfraudfix.
Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
Click the Clean up button
Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)
Click Yes to the reboot.
OK, could you post me another RSIT log, and let me know what it is that Sophos is reporting.
RatHat
RatHat,
Sorry. Classes are starting up and I've just been super busy. My computer has been working fine, so I'm probably okay. Thanks again so much. Have a great week!
It would be good if you could post me that last RSIT log, so I can make sure you really are clear, and good to go.
