windows updates failing and does not recognize the battery?

hello my daughters dell inspirion 6400 with vista home premium has a problem with the windows updates as they are all failing,also there is a msg in the task bar saying battery not recognized,i put her battery in my laptop and it says it is 100% fully charged,any ideas on any of these problems please?

i cannot try yet as my daughter does not get in from work until 18.30 and she will not tell me the password for her laptop,you dont know how to get the laptop to recognize the battery do you?
