opening photos

Of the 2550 photos in' my pictures' only 250 will now open. The files are listed but there is no association that can open them. Although I think a program 'xps' may have something to do with it. Rather than the thumbnail photo there is a graphic with a blue sky, two sand colour hills and two green conifer trees. Any ideas on how to open them please?
