Amazing auto search has hijacked my IE6. I'm on XP. Please help!

At first it put the additional browser buttons below the IE ones; last time I opened IE it opened 30 windows of tiscali 10.0 before I could stop it, presumably some pop-up rubbish, but it didn't look like it would ever stop!!!

First time anything like this has hit me and I'm no computer expert I'm afraid. However, I found a few solutions on google, including your site, using hijack this, so I have downloaded it and scanned and attach the log below. Please help!

Elsewhere I have seen postings saying that removing windows searching from XP solves the problem. Do you have any views on this?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ditto,

Thanks for your post. Here's the situation.

I've fixed as much as I could from your earlier post and uninstalled bargain buddy - there are three exceptions:

1. there was a line in your post that seemed incomplete and I wasn't sure whether you wanted me to delete it or not, so I played safe and didn't. the line is

9E992732-295F-4987-8BE3-16FAC1639198

Did you mean

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9E992732-295F-4987-8BE3-16FAC1639198} - C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\IESERV~1\IEService.dll

2. When I scanned today, I couldn't find the following line

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [djtopr1150.exe] "C:\DOCUME~1\Trevor\LOCALS~1
\Temp\djtopr1150.exe"

It's also not in the scan I attach below.

3. I did not delete the following line, since I wanted to check that it should be deleted, given that I do have napster installed on the computer

O16 - DPF: {4D7F48C0-CB49-4EA6-97D4-04F4EACC2F3B} (InstallShield Setup Player 2K2) - http://www.napster.c...lient/setup.exe

Anyhow, the latest scan is attached below.

Thanks again for the help so far,

Trevor.

P.S. I also have had search scout pop up on my other computer for some time (and never thought much about it) and I'm guessing that's more spyware, so I should send a scan on that too?

Thanks for your help again. Here's the latest.

From Admin's instructions, here's what I did:

Fixed all the lines in the scan okay.

On deleting the files in safe mode:

C:\WINDOWS\nem219.dll DID NOT FIND THIS ONE
C:\WINDOWS\twaintec.dll OKAY, BUT ALSO FOUND TWAIN.DLL, TWAIN_32.DLL AND TWAINTEC
C:\WINDOWS\wsem218.dll DELETED
C:\DOCUMENTS AND FILES\ALLUSERS\APPLICATIONS\IESERVICE <- folder DELETED, BUT THIS WAS IN DOCUMENTS AND FOLDERS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA - I GUESS THAT'S THE SAME THING
C:\WINDOWS\alchem.exe FOUND ALCHEMY BUT IT DID NOT HAVE SUFFIX .EXE - DETAILS SAID IT WAS AN APPLICATION, SO GUESSED THAT WAS THE SAME THING AND DELETED IT. ALSO THERE IS AN "ALCHEMY" CONFIGURATION FILE - SHOULD I DELETE THIS, TOO?
C:\WINDOWS\System32\syhmoacm.exe SAME AS ABOVE, NO .EXE, BUT DELETED IT ANYWAY
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates <- folder DELETED

Here's the latest log (still some web rebates in it, I see)

Trevor.

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu) and fix this entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebRebates0] "C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe"

Fixed that line. Here's the latest log. Am I good to go with IE again now do you think?

In this process a load of back up files have appeared on c:\ Do I need these or am I safe to delete them?

Thanks

Trevor.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.
Link to SpywareBlaster: http://www.geekstogo...tion=show&id=12

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D

Cool. thanks guys. I'll get that all done next week and then hit the donation button!

I'll be back to check my other pc at some point, too, which I think has some spyware (search scout) on it.
