If I need to reinstall win xp or the motherboard drivers, on a harddisk which already contains data, is it possible to reinstall it in partition c:\ (where win xp was previously installed) and without losing data on all other partitions? Will only partition C:\ be formatted and reinstalled by win xp?

Yes

But you might want to tell us a little more about the partition structure of your Hard Drive.

You should be fine with your plan.

Make sure you don't have "anything else" on your C:\ partition that you don't want to loose.
For instance, emails, favorites, etc. should be backed up, if they matter to you.

In a few instances, with particular application programs on the other partition, you may have to reinstall the application to restore its function, but this is unlikely.

Best Regards
