My wife has an HP dv6600 laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1 & 2GB of RAM. It's a dual core processor, but I don't remember what kind. It's up to date on patches and I've run through all the steps in he 'before you post a hijack this log' thread. The only thing found was the MyWebSearch bar, which was removed. I'm running AVG free and Zone Alarm free.

The machine is very finicky. If it goes to sleep, when it wakes up usually some program will not start. Quicken, PSE even IE 7 will fail to launch. The machine has to be restarted and then it usually won't shut down without forcing it to by holding the power button. It will rarely, actually, shut down normally, it must be forced.

When a program is running, it seems to run OK, but it's never been very fast (it's a year or so old).

Anyone know what to do to fix this thing up? It's driving me crazy, and I'm not sure where to look. I'm about ready to reinstall Vista from scratch, but that sounds pretty painful.

Hello salguod and welcome to the Vista forum.

I would like you to first complete an online update scan from Secunia to make sure that your computer is in fact (for the most part) up to date. You can go here to do this.
If any updates are present, I would like you to please install them and then report back to see if the issue is still present.

Your computer may also be slowed down and sometimes unresponsive because of too many programs starting at boot. I would like you to post a log of them here as well.
To do this...
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Choose "None of the above, Just start the program."
  • Choose Config from Other Stuff.
  • Choose Misc Tools
  • Next to Generate StartupList log, make sure both checkboxes are selected.
  • Then generate the list.
  • When notepad opens with the log, please copy all contents and paste them into a new post under this thread.

Thanks for you reply. Some additional info:

It seems that IE will lock up. Even after it's closed, it still shows up as a process (iexplore.exe) in task manager. It doesn't show as a running app, just a process and you cannot terminate the process. If I try to launch another session of IE, it never comes up but there will be a second iexplore.exe process that cannot be stopped. At this point, only restarting the computer will help and you have to force a shut down by holding the power switch.

Yesterday, after forcing a shut down, it would not restart. It stopped at the HP logo screen where I could hit escape to see system messages or F10 to enter setup. I shut it down and tried again with the same result. The third time I got the Windows startup choice screen (safe mode, etc) and chose start normally and I got a blue screen with a stop error after that. I shut it down again and this time I got a 'startup repair' screen. I ran through this process and it asked about doing a system restore, which I declined. It said it couldn't fix the startup problem. Next boot, it started up fine and has several times since. I have a coupld of screen shots that I'll post after the HJT log.

Here's the HJT log:

Sorry, I forgot about the update scan. Secunia reports that Vista is updated, but it also says there was a problem when checking for Windows updates. It also reported that Acrobat Reader was out of date, and that Flash & Java were both OK and out of date. Not sure how that could be ...

Thanks for the reply salguod.

Seeing as how I'm in training in the GeekUniversity and I'm not permitted to recommend anything about malware removal at this point, I need to point you over to the Malware Forum. Please make sure you complete the pre-steps before posting a HJT log.

(*Just for the record, I requested a HJT startup list log because it was the easiest way to get a list of things that run on your computer for me to hopefully give you instructions on how to disable some un-needed ones for some higher performance.*)

Before I have you do anything, it's best to make sure that the computer is in fact clean of malware, and I though I might have seen a few things that might be suspicious. After you get a clean report, we can hopefully resume our discussion here. Usually, slow downs are experienced from malware, and your problem might be solved after you go though the malware forum.

Thanks,

Sky.

I actually did all those steps before I came here. I'll go through them again and start a thread over there. I'll post back here when I'm done there.

Thanks

OK, I went through the process in the malware forum. He found a few things and we got them cleaned up, but I still have the problem. If my PC sits for any length of time, programs won't launch, specifically, IE, but I've also had issues connecting to a network drive, running Photoshop Elements and other programs, even running an uninstall routine. When that happens, I cannot even log off or shut down the computer, I have to hold the power button to get it to shut down.

Can you help me fix that?

Hi again, glad you're back from the malware forum. I hope I can solve your issue, but it may take a few days especially if what we try doesn't work at first.

I need a little more information about your computer. I need your amount of RAM, CPU Name, and CPU Specification. If you need to obtain this information, you can download, unzip, and run CPU-Z which will list this information for you. (Under the CPU tab, give me the Processor Name and Specification; and under the Memory tab, give me Channels # and Size.)

Then I would like you to watch all 8 (eight) videos on speeding up your computer. These are very step-by-step and detailed. You can find them here. They are intended for XP, but if you do encounter errors, post back and let me know. Sometimes if you just have way too many services and programs trying to start up and stay running on your computer, it can cause something like what your experiencing. But to make sure, we need to eliminate the source of the problem and make sure that this can't be it.

Thanks, Sky.

I skimmed through most of the videos. Some I was already familiar with (I've used AdAware and AVG for years) and some we just did in the malware forum (like clean the temp files). Because they are almost 2 years old and referred to XP, I was hesitant to implement some things like disabling services. I wasn't sure they worked the same in Vista as in XP. Some of the things were quite different in Vista as well.

In general, I know that I mentioned that it hasn't been very fast, but speed isn't my largest problem. It actually runs acceptably, when it runs. The big problem is being locked out of programs, mainly IE but others as well, and not being able to shut it down when that happens. It seems to happen after it has sat idle for a time. When it does happen with IE, I've noticed that the iexplore.exe process will not terminate after the IE window is closed, even by selecting it in task manager and attempting to terminate the process. If another session of IE is attempted, it will not connect, only says 'connecting', and another iexplore.exe process is started. Even when taht window is closed, the 2 iexplore processes remain. This can be repeated, adding more and more iexplore processes. The only way to correct it is by forcing a shut down.

I find that I have to do this several times a day. It's my wife's machine and she uses it for her online classes, so she needs IE a lot.

Thanks,

Another thing I should mention that happens frequently.

This laptop is connected via wireless to a home network. One desktop PC, running XP Pro, has a shared drive that we all use for our main storage. It's mapped on the Vista PC as 'Z:'. After a time, the Z: drive will unexpectedly become unavailable, wiht a message "The specified network name is no longer available." The other machine is still on and accessable, but this machine cannot 'see' it until I reboot.

The failure of IE and the loss of the Z: drive seem to go hand in hand.

Don't use sleep mode. Windows power savings features are simply not 100% reliable.

Sorry for my inactivity. (If I don't respond to your response(s) within 24 hours, please send me a kind pm so it will catch my attention.)

This just doesn't seem right that nothing seems to do anything to your problem. Is the information on your hard drive very important, and if possible, do you think you might be able to back it all up onto another device to be able to reformat? Please see the article here on Geeks to Go for backup options. I would like you to download the free HD Tune software, install it, then run it. First, check the "Health" tab to make sure your hard drive is in "Ok" condition. Then check the "Error Scan" tab and "Start" a scan. If you find any issues (from the Health tab or the Error Scan), then post them here. We want to make sure it, after all, isn't your hard drive causing any problems with slower-than-normal write/read times or failures.

Another thing, did you purchase a Vista Upgrade edition to go from XP to Vista? I've never heard of isssues before, but it wouldn't surprise me either if that was also the case.

Also, I would take Broni's suggestion and not use all of Windows power saving features. Personally, I never have my computer go to sleep, I only have it shut off my monitor after about 15 minutes and turn off my hard drive after about 3 hours of inactivity. I know my old desktop had some power issues in Windows, so see if you disable "Sleep Mode" if just having the computer on from the time you start it up if that makes any difference. That might be our solution there. :)
