I recently had a problem with some corrupted files. So I started fresh.

I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 98 SE. And

I reinstalled and updated drivers.

I updated Windows 98 from the Microsoft web site.

I reinstalled Spy-Bot and Ad-Aware.

Finally I reinstalled my AV: McAfee Virus Scan Pro, 7.0 with Guardian (Firewall). After install, I updated the McAfee s/w.

My system runs but is very sluggish and gets more sluggish after it remains on for a while.

Restarting helps, but often when I restart, my desktop dims and windows stops, locks up.

If I use Task Manager at that point, the Task Manager opens and says "Program Not Responding" but does NOT identify the program.

Usually Task Manager will close the unknown program and the system will continue shut down and restart.

any suggestions?

did you remember to install system drivers specific to your motherboard (not all systems have this, but it is often the most overlooked driver)

I did not install any motherboard specific drivers. I installed to reformatted hard drive with original Windows CD for "new computers" I recieved with the system.

I am not aware of motherboard specific drivers, where can theybe found or how can I determine if there are any?

This is NOT first time I have reformatted and reinstalled Windows 98. I did the same thing about 18 months ago and had no problems. The system ran well. This time I followed the same procedure...
