Issues with LAN on Starcraft

My brother and I are trying to get a two computer LAN network so we can play starcraft. I use a computer with XP and he uses vista. Starcraft works on both our computers, but when we go to multiplayer we encounter issues. We select the LAN UDP option and we can get to the game stage, but we only sometimes see the games we create and we can never connect to them even if we do see them. I'm fairly computer illiterate, so step-by-steps would be helpful.
