Gateway m-6862
C2D T5750 (2ghz)
4 gb RAM
512mb ATI mobility Radeon HD2600
Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit

Started a few weeks ago, more often then not, when I plug my laptop in after using it on battery it just locks up completely. It's not always, but most of the time. It stops doing everything and I can't move the mouse, bring up task manager. Nothing. Have to do a hard shut down (holding power button) and reboot.

It's a bit odd since it only happens some of the time. I'll tinker around see what I can but if anybody has any ideas they'd be much appreciated.

Any ideas cause this problem is somewhat foreign to me.

Only thing that comes to mind right off, is if you are plugging it in while it is on, that you are sometimes surging the system...

Yeah, but aren't laptops designed for portability. Plug and unplug?

I mean it happens a good 80% of the time. Sometimes I'll get lucky if I'm moving from one place to another but I've yet to track down the set conditions that it freezes or doesn't.

portability is what the battery is for.... it could be that the power back is going or the onboard power supply.... IF onboard that is expensive as that is usually integrated to the motherboard. With any electronics you are better off plugging them in with the power turned off.... the more delicate the electronics the more important that is.... Good luck

Plugging it in while running on battery will not hurt the laptop when it is all working normally, I have been doing it for years with my laptops and have never had an issue.

Quite likely you have an issue with your battery or power adapter. What happens if you are running in safe mode and plug it in while running on battery?

I'm having the same problem with the same laptop. first noticed it when my power inverter in my work truck errored for low voltage, locked up my laptop and does almost everytime I either plug it in or even sometimes when I unplug it.

If anyone figures out if this is normal or is there something wrong, please let me know..gets realy annoying when I have 2 pages of notes written and the laptop locks up and I loose it all.

Yep, I have the same laptop with the exact same problems regarding plugging it in AND crashing while plugging in USB devices.

It's random and quite often, but not 100% of the time.

It looks like there isn't a solution yet, but I am happy to know I am not the only person with this problem.

My laptop freezes if I try to use it when either my power cord or mouse is plugged in. Other things like my ipod are ok as far as Ive seen. This just started yesterday and it sucks! Any solutions?
Also it doesn't matter when I plus in the laptop if it is plugged in it doesn't work...

Please start your own topic as this topic has not had a reply since April 6th.
Although your issue may seem similar there can be other factors that may need to be resolved.
By bumping on someone's topic it makes it confusing for the tech to understand who they are helping. This can in turn cause the wrong support to be given and can cause instability or worse to happen to your system. Thank you for your cooperation.
