Any luck with repair installation? I was helping someone who had a similar problem, but repairing did not help me. I was lucky to make it into safe mode... but I'm still not exactly sure what the problem was. However, I think I might have narrowed the possible things that might've contributed to the error:

1) the computer was compromised. I noticed that the dropped files were run as services, somehow. Perhaps that could've interfered?
2) viruses - Randex.gen. But I saw a Randex.gen virus on another computer and nothing nasty was happening.
3) spyware. The biggest problem i had with the spyware was trying to get rid of vx2.betterinternet (or whatever that is) - in particular, the dlls were a pain to get rid of. I ended up going into the recovery console to delete one that just wouldn't go away. I'm sure there was an easier way, but I didn't figure that one out yet. <_<

Erm, sorry, I guess that was a little long.

Hi shadowfax, welcome to Geeks to Go! <_<

I've split your post into a new topic. Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.
