When windows boots up, I have to click on a user profile, then it loads the rest of the way. I never had to do this before. How can I skip this step ?

try this....

start->control panel. Then click the User Accounts icon. Under Pick a Task, chose 'change the way users log on or off'. Finally uncheck the first box which reads 'Use the welcome screen'.

hope it works.
