Mass Effect Problem

I got mass effect, and so far it looks great. but there is one thing that is really pissing me off. on the first level you are assigned to, i try to sprint(which by default is mapped to shift) and then nothing happens. i try all the other action buttons and they work fine, but when i try to sprint, i just keep on walking, which makes it really tough to survive in battles when your just walking around. oddly though, it worked on the ship, but do i need to press a specific button or something to toggle the the sprint?
what can i do so i can sprint?

nevermind. i guess it was a problem caused by the game. its good now.

Don't know if you have figured it out or not but you can only sprint while in combat.
