hello everybody, im trying to help afriend out. i come to his bar most days and connect to the internet via wifi and have no problems whatsoever,im running windows vista, as where he has an acer laptop and is running windows xp.The wifi on his laptop is on and it shows that he is connected to the net but in the window that shows the connection there is a padlock and he is not reciveing data, and also not able to open internet expoler or anything, im sure its a simple thing and with the click of a button it can be unlocked, but ive no idea where to start looking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks for all the hard work and help. jason

The lock icon probably means the wireless feature on the router that the laptop has detected is password-protected. Your friend needs to enter that same password into the wireless software on his laptop. Clicking the appropriate connection in the connection window should open a box where you type the password.

The password is often printed on the back of the router when wireless security is on by default. Otherwise you'll need to open the router's configuration page in a web-browser and the password is on there under 'Advanced Settings or 'wireless settings'

tanks for the reply, its nothing to do with the password as ive got the password hence being able to connect, but there are two laptopsboth of which are running xp, and both have the same problem password is introduced and it connects but unable to connect to tb pages as its not reciving data only sending thats where the padlock comes in on the properties page. hope some one has a oulocion and thanks again for your reply.
