The lock icon probably means the wireless feature on the router that the laptop has detected is password-protected. Your friend needs to enter that same password into the wireless software on his laptop. Clicking the appropriate connection in the connection window should open a box where you type the password.
The password is often printed on the back of the router when wireless security is on by default. Otherwise you'll need to open the router's configuration page in a web-browser and the password is on there under 'Advanced Settings or 'wireless settings'
