My girlfriend's laptop has only, on average, about 40 minutes of battery life. I have already changed some settings so that the laptop runs with the default settings for "Maximum Power Saving", but I want to see what I can do to tweak it further. Right now I plan on going into msconfig and see what programs load on start up, but since she is a student and said she'll need the computer to run as long as possible I am looking to do whatever I can to lengthen the battery life (she may still be under warranty and be able to purchase a new battery, but this will need to work until that checks out).

Any advice appreciated.

Hi, You say the laptop may still be under warranty, then if it is take it back and get a new battery.
My Lenovo y510 will run 4 hr on battery power.

The number of items configured to start with Windows have little or no effect on battery life -- they only effect how long Windows takes to fully load the desktop and how much free RAM is left.

If it's a new laptop, bear in mind it will need to be fully discharged/fully recharged several times before the battery gives you the running time you expect it to give. This applies to most rechargeable equipment when new.
