Don't know if this will solve the erratic mouse movements but I just downloaded and installed the ALPS driver. I got back my vertical scroll bar (which had been lacking) and also the Dell Touchpad icon in bottom tray (also wasn't installed on this laptop). So, I'll just need to see if it helps with the other problems....to be continued

It's right above the dash and plus signs..

According the small manual that came with the system, the key between F12 and insert on the functions key row is the toggle. It looks like a "X."

I have Numlock/Scroll-lock and Print-screen/Sysreg keys between F12 and Insert here. I see no Fn key to toggle the touchpad, and surely that would turn it off completely, no?

I have the same problem too on this Inspiron 1525.

I have changed the HDD (the original was faulty), and done a clean install of XP Pro in favour of the original Vista. Reloaded the Dell drivers. I also put the tape under the cable as in http://en.community....1/19505726.aspx, all to no avail. It still freezes now and again, whilst playing a game.

I am trying out a 19.5V/6.7A charger to see what that does, although I am sceptical I must say, but who knows?

I will follow the thread with interest, and if I do find a fix, will post it.

Thanks for your reply Phil, but the laptop in question is older than this thread, and its issues in the thread are relevant to it. I see no point in starting a new thread when this one addresses the issue perfectly well.

I've had my laptop since last Dec. I've heard that both the Inspiron 1525 and 1545 touchpads have similar problems. As I mentioned in my last post, I recently installed an ALPS driver and have since then had none of the problems I reported (erratic curser that jumped all over the screen making typing hellish). I don't know if this solution will help anyone else. I hope so.

Touchpad not Working Properly


On some Dell laptop systems may the touchpad not work.

It was documented that this may be solved by draining the flea power.


Drain the Flea Power From Dell Laptop

• Power the system down.
• Remove all external devices and disconnect AC adapter power cable from the system if applicable.
• Remove the battery from the system.
• Hold down the power button continuously for at least 5 seconds.
• Do not release the power button during this process.
• Insert the battery back to the system.
• Power the system on.

Through trial and error (actually by banging my fists) I found:

Press the spacebar three to five times while holding down the spacebar, and a second mouse should appear near the original one.
You can move the second mouse, usually.
The original should then disapear.

If that doesn't work, (on Vista or 7) Press the Windows key (between Fn and Alt), type "notepad.exe" and hit <--'Enter, or (on XP) Press the Windows key, press tab until All Programs is highlighted, press <--'Enter, use ↑, →, ↓, and ← to get to the Accessories menu, <--'Enter, Notepad, <--'Enter.
Then, type several long liness of text, after each one test the mouse.

If both of those don't work, turn off the computer for 15 minutes

Hi,
just wanted to let you knoww that the link below worked for me! I have an Inspiron m5030 and the touchpad cursor froze this morning. I powered down, removed AC cord and the battery. Held the power button for 5-10 seconds. Re-attached battery, powered on, logged in. Cursor still frozen at this point, but then I pressed the button between f12 and insert (has the touchpad symbol with an "x" through it), and the cursor moved!!!!!!!
