everytime i see the automatic updates balloon on the taskbar, it fails.
happened for a long time b4

You could try to download Office2003 service 3. It was released in Sept 2007, which isn't quite as long as ago as "forever". It is a bit large, (117 MB), but it may get you over your Office update problem. You can find it on The Software Patch under office suite updates. (www.softwarepatch.com/office/office2003sp3.html).
