computer and itunes wont detect ipod?

hey i bought an ipod off one if my buddys anyway when i plug it in nothing comes up(but it still charges) and you cant bring it up through my computer...whats the problem?

Is this a guessing game???

What kind of ipod?
What generation, what model?
What kind of connection? Firewire, USB???
Does the ipod work and can it play music files?
Is the cable you're using any good?
Have you tried another cable or another Firewire/USB port?
Does it work on another computer?

Simply stating that the computer doesn't see your ipod leaves too many questions unanswered. Please be more specific.
