My son has picked up something that causes a DEP error whenever some aspect of the file system is looked at. This means that we cannot open folders, run control panel, add remove programs, etc. Booting into safe mode works, so it is something that happens after that. Here is a recent HJT log.

Please offer suggestions. Thanks. Douglas

Hi dhfifield

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Download CWShredder (there is a link in my signature), unzip it, and save it on the Desktop. Please do not run it yet, though.
Run CWShredder to fix your CWS problem.

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!
http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Reboot when prompted to let it clean out the remaining files.

Lets see if this will finds any hidden Trojan’s http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times. The purchased license code of the plus version can be entered at any time.
Ewido will auto-udate tne run a full scan save the log when the scan has finnished.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:

This thread is being closed. We are no longer able to help you, as you are using an illegal copy of Windows. We have a strict policy we adhere to in not helping people unless they have a valid copy of Windows.

Good luck.

I am deeply sorry. Please accept my humble apologies. I did receive your email, and passed it on to our primary Administrator. It is obvious to us by your email that you DO in fact have a legitimate copy of Windows, and that the lines that caused the doubt were put on the system by a Trojan or virus. I am going to pm your Helper right now, and ask him to continue your fix.

And from a mom to a dad.....tell your son I said he REALLY needs to listen to you on the 'safety issues'. If he does not, he's going to find himself unable to access the 'net at all. There are some VERY nasty infections running around now which not only can hinder your ability to access the 'net, but can also corrupt valid system files, etc and so on.

Again, I"m really sorry for the confusion!

Think nothing of it Kat. I appreciate your help and the help of all the other volunteers out there. This one has me stumped, though. I am on the verge of flatlining the kid's PC and laying down a fresh copy. He is really dreading that, but still claims to know nothing about how the crack got on his PC.

If my case can be made active again, I will try to post a fresh HJT log tomorrow.

Peace,
Douglas

All,

Here is a current copy of the HJT log from my son's PC. The problem that sparked all of this is still with us and that is a DEP error whenever a Windows file explorer operation is invoked. This means that I can only use Explorer in safe mode. Same goes for the Control Panel and zip/unzip folder functions. An additional wrinkle is that I cannot get at my son's documents from safe mode because his personal document file tree is set as "private". I have tried to change this by logging on to his environment, opening the properties box for his documents, going to the sharing tab where the "Make this private" box is checked, but it is greyed out and I have been unable to change it. Any thoughts on that would also be appreciated. TIA, Douglas

before thatman comes back, lets get rid of some of these nasties and then he can take another look at it as well :tazz:

Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\Program Files\MSN Toolbar Suite\DS\02.00.0001.1203\en-us\bin\MSNGather.exe
Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O23 - Service: X10 Device Network Service (x10nets) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\ATIMUL~1\RemCtrl\x10nets.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked and Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\DOCUME~1\LITTLE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sais.exe
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot and then post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

I did as you requested. The DEP error is still there. The sharing problem is still there.

Here is the HJT log after running the above actions:

SYMPTOMS
When you run a program in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Data Execution Prevention – Microsoft Windows
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.
Name: program name
Publisher: program publisher

Data Execution Prevention helps protect against damage from viruses or other threats. Some programs might not run correctly when it is turned on. For an updated version of this program, contact the publisher. What else should I do?

If you click Close Message, the program quits, and Windows Error Reporting gives you the option to send an error report.
Back to the top Back to the top
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Microsoft Windows XP SP2 uses the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature to help prevent damage from viruses and from other security threats.

DEP works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as "non-executable." If a program tries to run code from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you, whether the code is malicious or not.
Back to the top Back to the top
RESOLUTION
To avoid this behavior, contact your program vendor to see if an update is available that enables the program to work correctly with DEP.
Back to the top Back to the top
WORKAROUND
If your computer is set to apply DEP to all programs and services, the DEP error message will have a Change Settings button. If an update to the program is not available, follow these steps to add an exception for the program from the DEP error message:
1. When you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, click Change Settings.
2. Click to select the check box next to the program, and then click Apply.
3. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK two times, and then restart your system.

You can also add an exception for the program by using System Properties in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click the Advanced tab, click Performance, and then click Settings.
3. In Performance Options, click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Add.
4. In the Open dialog box, locate and then click the program.
5. Click Open, click Apply, and then click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK.
Back to the top Back to the top
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
Back to the top Back to the top
MORE INFORMATION
If your computer is configured to turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, the Change Settings button will not be available from the DEP error message.

You can view the DEP configuration for your computer in System in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance, click Settings.
3. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
4. Note if Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only or Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select: is selected.
When your computer is configured to turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, you cannot add an exception for a program. This is the behavior that is by design in Windows XP SP2.

If your computer is configured to turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, and the DEP error message continues to appear, a program may be installed that extends Windows functionality. This program may be installed so that it causes a DEP problem in an important Windows program or service.

If this behavior is recent and has not occurred before, you may be able to prevent the DEP error message by removing recently installed programs.

Hi KC,

I understand the basic functioning of DEP.

You say:
RESOLUTION
To avoid this behavior, contact your program vendor to see if an update is available that enables the program to work correctly with DEP.

The program causing the error is Microsoft Explorer. Don't you find that strange? I do. Why was it not doing this before?

As to the solution, you say that I can add an exception to DEP. I would prefer to find out what caused MS Explorer to trigger the DEP error and fix THAT. A further complication is experienced when you say:

You can view the DEP configuration for your computer in System in Control Panel.

I can't get to the Control Panel (as stated several times in the posts) because it triggers the same error and the system shuts down.

I do not know what to do at this point.

TIA, Douglas

At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times. The purchased license code of the plus version can be entered at any time.

KC,

I don't mean to sound flip, but have you really read what I have been saying? Really, I appreciate the help, but I am beginning to wonder.

You say, Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.

This is my problem. I cannot open Windows Explorer!!!!!! I cannot use the "Run" command.

I have run Ewido (and will happily do so again even though it appears that it is doing a real time monitor of all PC activity on my son's box).

As I said, I appreciate all the volunteer help that you guys offer, but at this point, I feel as though you are just cutting and pasting help routines into responses without taking the time to read the posts that I come back with.

Let me know if you still want me to perform the tasks you listed in your post (minus the "explorer" and "run" parts, of course).
