I have Zone Alarm as my antivirus software. ZA has sent me a message they have a new update. When I download the new update and try to run it, I get the message "Your computer needs a Windows XP Update Service Pack hotfix before you can install this version of Zone Alarm Anti Virus. Please get hotfix KB943232, install hotfix, reboot, then run Zone Alarm installer."
I have received hotfix from Microsoft via email. My problem is, the hotfix asks where to install, i.e. C:\ .
I don't know where to install.
Any ideas?

It's unusual for a MS Hotfix to ask for an installation path, but in this instance 'C:\Windows' would be my choice. It's to fix a bug in a Microsoft DLL file (Sxs.dll) so my guess is the fix has been written to target that file wherever you install it since Microsoft knows where it's located, but 'C:\Windows' seems to me to be a logical choice to install the fix.

I tried putting the hotfix in C:\windows, then tried C\:windows\system32\ , still comes back with same message.

you need to update to latest MS XP service pack (SP3) to run latest version of ZA (8.0).
Or if you are on XP2 stay with previous version (7.0).

That's another problem, I have tried to update with SP 3, but every time I run it I get the message "Access Denied".

I tried running it without Zone Alarm on, i. e. disabled, same results.

I don't know what to try next. I would really like to get Zone Alarm updated.

At what point are you getting the message "Access Denied"? During installation?

OK, what is the full message?
Access denied to what? What EXACTLY are you doing, when you're getting "Access denied" message? What part of installation?
Are you using Windows updates, or you're installing standalone SP3?

I am using Windows update.

The full message is "Access Denied". When I click OK, I get "Service Pack 3 did not successfully complete".

Then it uninstalls.

Download standalone SP3 from M$: http://snipr.com/5o77b
Disregard M$ note:
DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER

Take ownership of what file?

I have the Home Edition. Do I stay in the safe mode to download SP3?

Take ownership of downloaded SP3 file. I assume, "Access denied" error pops-up, when you try to run installation file, right?
If not, explain.

The "Access Denied" message is displayed after installation has run for quite a while.

I then click "OK", and it displays message "Service Pack 3 did not successfully complete", then it goes thru an uninstall procedure.
