I use SBC Yahoo! DSL for internet, and a 2Wire Gateway for the router thing.
So yeah, i had malware, and i guess i uninstalled it

see
http://www.geekstogo...is-t217429.html

But now my internet doesn't work. I don't really get why. I have 2 network connections, one is my Ethernet one, and the other a 1394 thing. Sorry, i forgot what they were, i'm at the library typing this up.

If you guys need any more info, ask please, i realllly need help :) i have homework due next friday

Thanks,
Matt

With just recovering from a malware infestation the first thing I would suspect is corrupted winsock settings. See the website below for a winsock fix tool and other ideas on this issue. The first thing i would do is download the WinSock XP Fix and run that before anything else. G'luck and post back results.

are you able to ping your router? usually 192.168.1.1

are you able to ping an ouside IP? try google 216.239.32.10

open a command prompt and type in:

ping 216.239.32.10

ok, i pinged both 192.168.1.1 and 216.239.32.10, seperately. Both came up the same

Pinging ____________ with 32 bytes of data:

Desitnation host unreachable.
Desitnation host unreachable.
Desitnation host unreachable.
Desitnation host unreachable.

Ping Statistics for _________:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner>ping _______________

that was a huge pain to type out.

Also, on the system tray, the network thing is just stuck on acquiring network address

whoops, the line

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner>ping _______________

is supposed to be at the top of that

also, the 2Wire Gateway Monitor router thing has green lights for everything, but ethernet and wireless lights are flickering. i don't know it that means anything

i keep forgetting to mention things, this lack of internet is kinda weird, because while i had the malware, i still had internet, but my programs such as my desktop weather, some pc games, my 2Wire Monitor program, and basically every program could not connect to the internet. Then, eventually i couldn't log onto the internet anymore

sorry my bad, do you have a router? Shoulda asked that before.

Also check your LAN settings,

In IE
goto Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections tab --> LAN settings

Make sure auto detect settings is checked and nothing else.

and then check your DNS settings
goto Control Panel --> Network Connections --> Right click your connection then click properties --> check the properties for internet protocol(TCP/IP) make sure both obtain IP automatically and obtain DNS automatically are checked.

i checked the auto detect lan settings, internet still doesn't work,
my auto IP and DNS were checked already

and now i'm confused of what a router is. basically what i have is this thing that's hooked up to a filter thing that goes into the phone jack of my house. And this thing is like a box that has ethernet cable connections, and can give wireless internet too

it's name is "2Wire Gateway"

Ok on your laptop that is working type

ipconfig /all

The default gateway there is your router IP, sounds like you have a DSL modeom/router combo.

If the IP to your router is 192.168.1.1 then it looks like your computer isn't able to ping your router. Check your device manager and make sure your NIC card is installed. Make sure you have the driver for it and then i would go ahead and uninstall the driver to your NIC card and reinstall it.
