The code that pops up is as follows:
For some reason your system denied access write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in the file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.
If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click, Start, Run and type:
notepad C:\WindowsSystem32\drivers\etc\hosts
and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as "hosts" ( with quotes ), and reboot.
For Vista: simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackTHis icon, choose "Run as Administrator"
I have tried this numerous times and I am then told that " cannot find the C:\Windows\System32\hijackthis.log file"
Obviously I am not that computer savvy and I am terrified to delete anything in this computer
I did attempt to reinstall HijackThis and I am hoping that this will help.Also, my Trend Internet Security is going insane! Upon opening 2 error codes pop up:
1: Unable to recognize the software configuration. Restart your computer to restore the missing information. If the problem persists, please
contact technical support.
2: An error has interrupted the task currently in progress. Please restart your security software and try again. If the problem persists, please
contact Trend Micro technical support for help.
I have contacted tech. support and they are currently trying to help me out. I am not sure if the two problems are connected or not but figured this may be useful information to you.
