ssalter,

This Microsoft article looks like it addresses your issue. It has the exact error message you're getting. It does reference a hotfix for the issue. I hope this helps.

There are only 2 articles on Microsoft's site with this error message, at least that I can find. This is the second one. In doing a Google search, I keep finding the same 2 circumstances turning up. I'll poke around the MS forums and see if I can find anything.

Unfortunately, I've found the same fixes in the Microsoft forums. We have another person here who knows Server 2K3 quite well - let me point him in here.

is that service pack 2 to msde or service pack2 for windows 2003?

at microsoft.com they have up to sp4 for MSDE now...the link above (the one that says not to do it) mentions that if you're not SURE that you need it to wait for the SP of MSDE...judging by the dates sp4 is later than the other link

here is the fix provided by dell. i have not tried it yet as it requires a reboot and this is a production server ,i will run tonight.
WindowsServer2003-KB940349-v3-x86-ENU
as well as setting the removable backup storage to "manual" ( i have tape ware installed ) this is supposed to fix it.
i thank you for the help!
i will post to this topic with results
