Hi,

I am planning on building decent gaming and general use computer for college next year.
I am going to buy all my parts this Black Friday (hoping for low prices).
It is a my first time building a computer so any useful tips will be very helpful and appreciated.
I am very good at figuring stuff out and manuals always make sense for me.
My budget is around $1300 and is pretty flexible and if there is a large difference in performance i am willing to go to $1500.

Here are a few options that i have thought of and are definitely not the final build.
I am for familiar with Intel so my choices are Intel but i am willing to go AMD if it is wiser choice and the same goes for Nvidia/ATI.

I am also considering a Intel i7 and DDR3 building, any opinions on that?

Case:

* 1st Choice: Cooler Master Cosmos S
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811119150

* 2nd Choice: Cooler Master HAF 932
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811119160

Motherboard:
Not so familiar. Suggestions?

* EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813188024

Ram:
Also need suggestions.

*CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
http://www.newegg.co...=N82E1682014519

CPU:
AMD or Intel?

* 1st Choice: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83ghz
http://www.newegg.co...x...1&Tpk=q9550

* 2nd Choice: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.63 ghz
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115131

CPU Cooler:

Not sure... again.

* 1st Choice: Cooler Master V8 (if it is available by black friday)
I think the red led and black theme would look awesome with my case choices.
* 2nd Choice: Cooler Master Hyper z600

Power Supply:
Need suggestions.

* OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI 700W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817341002

Graphics Card:
Oh god...

* XFX PVT98WYDFH GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814150314

Also considering SLI'ing this card if it is worth the price or getting a GTX 260.

Sound Card:
No idea at all. <$100 or none at all.

Thank you everyone who read through this list and considered the possibility of helping me.
Any suggestions or help is very appreciated.

AWX

Alright, I just decided to have some fun (on your behalf) and throw up an i7 build. I think you'll be rather surprised. :help:

:) Nehalem :wave:

Okay, just open each link in a new tab and you'll work it out pretty quick - make a Wish List with them. Total comes to $1,326.92.

Shouldn't be too hard to have that CPU clocked to 3GHz if you know what you're doing, then she'll be flying. :)

Cheers

I read / heard some where (if you got the cash) that 2 of them beats 1 of the new gtx 2xx series and that 3 of them beats the same card. As I have also heard that the 9800 GT are the only tri-sli card. I'll have to go and dig that info to back that up with.

Well thanks for the suggetions. I'm thinking of SLI'ing this card. http://www.newegg.co...-_-NA-_-NA-_-NA
Only $170~! after rebates~! u can't beat that~! What would be a appropriate power supply? Do you think 750W will be enough for SLI GTX 260?

You could go a bit better for any future upgrade purposes, something like this is nice (although a fair hike more expensive).

Actually I've just done a bit more research, you'll need to change the RAM. Something like this is a bit expensive, but has great timings (although currently out of stock).

Otherwise this one is in stock at the moment, and doesn't look too bad, but I don't like the high timings on it.

oh daayuummm. That ram is hella expensive. i don't think that will fit in with my budget. Quite honestly i don't trust the new motherboards for the i7... the ones i do are $300 which is hella expensive. If i'm going with a i7/DDR3 build i'm going to have to ditch SLI and go with single GTX 260 and it will still be quite a lot.

Why do you not trust the new motherboards?

But that's a good point, if you're too much over budget. I've also forgotten to include an OS in that price...

I heard the MSI one had problems with SLI and overclocking.
And the rest are wayyy to expensive. And the ram needs to be triple channel ddr3 instead of dual channel dd3.

Very expensive. and 6core processors will be released in a year or two so i'd rather stick with the cheap core 2 quads.

I just want to clarify something here. Not all x58 boards have SLI. MSI has two different boards, one motherboard without SLI and another motherbaord with SLI and crossfire.
