When open a new document in Office 97, it is not new, but it is an old document, always the same one. I don't know how to open a purely new document.

Would appreciate your experience to guide me through this.

Likely your normal.dot template has been changed. To restore the default, search your hard drive for normal.dot, and rename it (something like oldnormal.dot). Restart Word, and you should have the blank document you're expecting. <_<
