How to register/associate programs...

I've read in a few places that users occasionally have a problem with getting some programs to work after restoring an image of their System partition.
I think they said they couldn't get the programs to register with XP.
I've got XP Pro w/SP3.
How would I be able to take care of that if it happens to me?
