I believe I have deleted most of the bad files from the register. I have ran a new hijack this log and it is as follows. I still get the aurora pop ups. Please let me know if there are any other things i can try.

Hello Matt (Helpmegolf) and welcome to Geeks to Go.

A very special welcome to a fellow golfer. I counted 7 different infections on your log and decided to let an automated tool do some of the work, and I’ll take care of what is left over. So if you are ready, let’s get fixing!

You are running HijackThis from Temporary Files; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The programme will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the programme scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.
There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

and I will take another look.

Fellow Golfer:

Thanks for your help. Where do you reside? If nearby, I owe you a round of golf at a nice course in Columbus Ohio. Please help if you can once again. I believe I did everything right.

Matt

Hello again Matt

A round of golf would be a pleasure, but the 4000 miles (check my profile) between us makes it difficult (it would be a good drive even with my Ping i3 driver - FORE!), but thanks for the invitation anyway.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the Internet, or my instructions!

The automated processes have done their jobs admirably, but there is one nasty infection to get rid of. Now if you are ready, let’s get fixing again!

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below services:

System Startup Service (or SvcProc)
WinTools for IE service (or WinToolsSvc)

When you find them, double-click on each one. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

SvcProc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click NO.

Then click on Delete an NT Service again a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

WinToolsSvc

Click OK

This time when it asks if you want to reboot, click YES

Please open Ad-Aware. Configure, and run a FULL Ad-Aware scan using the following configuration below
  • Check for Update
  • Click Start
  • Select Perform Full System Scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
  • It will list malware files and registry keys. Click Next.
  • Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All, then Next.
  • It will ask for verification of checked items-. Choose OK.
  • Close Ad-Aware, Shut down and restart your system.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{00D6A7E7-4A97-456f-848A-3B75BF7554D7} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -
O23 - Service: WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

P2P Networking
Viewpoint manager
Viewpoint media player

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\
C:\Program Files\WindowsSA\

Please delete this file (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

BEFORE rebooting, please check your system32 folder to see that userinit.exe exists!!

If it is not there, please copy that file from:

C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\userinit.exe to: C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

Now please run Ad-Aware again, exactly as before. This is important.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Well you are a long way away, but very helpful.

I do not see any other programs that are unfamiliar. I have a lot of programs that are standard to my field of work. The Golf Business.

Here is my hijack this log.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello again Matt

Nice to see that fix worked OK. - phew! (wiping sweat from brow). I noticed the golf handicap programme, are you a golf pro? I have a friend, Mark Butler, a golf pro, who should be teeing off as I write at Gleneagles, having played Dundonald yesterday and Glasgow Gales on Monday. What a tough life :tazz:

Well, this next bit is all that is left to do, nothing major at all. I should really have included them in the last fix, but I wasn't certain of them falling into the category of malware. Further research indicates that they are, so they have to go. Here's the fix:

Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check mark against each of the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://rd.yahoo.com/...hoo.sbc.com/dsl
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://rd.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://rd.yahoo.com/...hoo.sbc.com/dsl

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot normally, run HijackThis and send me a fresh log in your reply and I'll take another look.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes, having two or more antivirus systems would be really bad as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Happy Golfing & Surfing!
