Hello all and thanks in advance for reading my problem.

I had \ have a nasty infection. I have read everything about this trojan-spy.smitfraud.c adware/spyware. I was able to re-claim my browser. Originally the browser would re-direct to a different search page.

I followed the guidelines here at this site and used the following anti-virus spyware programs... what follows is my attempts to fix... All scans were done with the latest updates/definitions...

Bill Computer Problem

Ran Norton Antivitus fixed all virus it found

Ran Ad Aware SE cleaned all spy ware

Ran Search and Destroy and received clean bill of health

Ran Ad aware found 1 problem, fixed with custom settings recommended (geeks to go site), re-ran ad aware, found

same problem fixed, re-booted, re-ran ad aware, found same problem fixed, re-booted, etc.

Desktop says in blue backdrop a warning about Trojan-Spy.Html.Smitfraud.c

Attempts to change desktop wallpaper are impossible. Tabs missing from display properties section.

Tried TrojanHunter didn't find anything.

Downloaded CWshredder (was called Spysubtract at their site) found and fixed 3 problems all related to CoolWebSearch

re-booted... still Attempts to change desktop wallpaper are impossible. Tabs missing from display properties section.

Downloaded Hijack this, scanned computer, posting log...

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

Select the Delete on reboot option.

In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting:

C:\wp.exe

It will prompt you to reboot, press the NO button. Instead, copy and paste the following and click the 'Delete File' button again:

C:\wp.bmp

When it prompts you to reboot this time, press the NO button again and repeat the process on all these files until the last one has been entered then press the YES button:

C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way):

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop. Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

Click the "Go" button and it will take you into the "Policies" folder. Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel), if found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete

Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

Download this file to your desktop. Click HERE. Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so. Repeat for all log-in accounts on your computer.

Post a new HiJackThis log here when done as there will be more to do.

Thank You for the help.

I did EXACTLY as instructed... however, I did not find the 4 mentioned files to delete using windows explorer (in safe mode)...

I did everything else and now can see the tab to change desktop wallpaper.

New Hijackthis log follows...

Question, after everything is all clean, can I uninstall all these files/programs I downloaded and installed to fix this?

new log...

You can delete anything that I have you download when you are clean if you prefer.

First of all, open Spybot S&D, click Mode>Advanced>Tools>Resident and remove the check from the Tea Timer box. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {467FAEB2-5F5B-4c81-BAE0-2A4752CA7F4E} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] c:\wp.exe
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {5CC907B1-67F4-4C2B-A798-136A6B732AD5} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {5CC907B1-67F4-4C2B-A798-136A6B732AD5} - (no file) (HKCU)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: 5bx9m4c5dcb.dll

Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check over.
