My laptop (After clicking shutdown from the start menu) will after around 10 seconds get rid of the sidebar, then it will wait about 5 minuites for the machine to actually turn off.

Why is it hanging so long? its been doing it for about a week

Your using XP according to your member info (unless you haven't changed info to show Vista). XP does not have an official or built-in 'Sidebar' so you must have installed a third-party one. It follows you may also have added other customisations, and they do eventually add up to a greater potential for instability and/or an extended shutdown process.

I would first check how your system behaves with all customisations removed (sidebar, shell transformation packs etc.) before persuing this further.
That may well be the cause.
