I have been working on a badly infected Windows XP Machine for weeks. When I first started there were multiple pop ups, the desktop background was blue with message stating that the computer was infected, Task Manager was disabled, etc.

I was able to reactivate Task Manager, have run many scans including Ad-Aware, Spybot, Malware Bytes (which no longer runs), AVG, Advast and have still been finding Trojans, Spyware, Cookies. To install some of the software I had to rename the executable file.

The computer is in a lot better shape then when I began but I am still having issues, the browser is redirected whenever I attempt to go to an Antivirus/Spyware related site. I have been trying to install McAfee but I believe the browser issues is preventing internet access to check for updates and therefore prevents me from updating/installing the software.

I have taken all the steps in the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Malware Cleaning Guide" and now at the point where I post the HiJack this results.

I am very grateful for any help that the Geeks to Go Staff can provide! :)

So here it is:

Hey tashae29,

Welcome to Geeks to Go! My name is SpySentinel and I will be helping you fix your computer problem.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hello SpySentinel and thanks for your assistance.

I ran ComboFix, however it was unable to install the Windows Recovery Console, said failure updating and it continued on with scan. During scan, it said there was rootkit activity and therefore rebooted before continuing the scan.

Below are the results:

ComboFix 08-12-01.01 - Compaq_Owner 2008-12-01 21:59:10.1 - NTFSx86
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.122 [GMT -5:00]

Hi tashae29, you have a nasty infection called TDSS Rootkit

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\SET20.tmp
c:\windows\viassary-hp.reg

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Was there something wrong with the results? Should I remove the Anti Spyware/Virus software if I am unable to disable them?

In order to make sure that combofix can work properly, just disable all anti virus and anti malware programs, do not remove them.

How is your computer running?

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
