no sound devices in my Windows XP

I have a toshiba satelite R15S822 that i do have some sound when I get an error message. So i am confused? also in control panel soundand audio devices the sound and audio tabs are both gray and i can not change anything. I have on sound icon in the right corner either. is there something that is causing the sound card to not recognize my devices? Please any help with a step by step break down would be appreciated since i am a non-geek.
