Playing a Wii game from Japan?

I'm very interested in getting a Wii game from Japan (taiko no Tatsujin for the Wii), but I'm not sure what approach I should take to getting it to work in America. I believe that the Wii is region locked, but I am not sure. What is a good approach for this?

Can you copy Wii games??
I am getting my daughter a Wii for Christmas. She does not take very good care of her games and I want to make copies so she doesn't scratch the originals. They are so very expensive!!! Can I cope them and if so how do I do it???
